Clive Caldwell, Air Ace is an absorbing record of the astounding military achievements of Group Captain Clive Caldwell, Australia's top scoring fighter pilot during World War 11.
'His courage, determination, skill and his undoubtedly outstanding ability as a leader are an inspiration to his Wing and worthy of the highest praise.' Extract from Distinguished Service Order citation.
Clive Caldwell was officially attributed with more than 27 victories against German, Italian and Japanese aircraft and became an Ace in both the Middle East and Pacific theatres - the only Australian pilot to attain this status.
Originally considered a loose cannon, Caldwell became a fine fighter pilot and a dedicated leader, loved by those he commanded and respected by the public.
In 1945 his career took a turn for the worse when he faced the Barry Inquiry where he was investigated for illegal liquor trading and his involvement in the so called 'Morotai Mutiny'.
This event, and the disciplinary proceedings which followed, left him embittered about his service career, and he took his discharge from the RAAF in 1946. |
