A story based on the life of a young man, born into poverty in rural China, of his love for his family, his village and for the beauty and tranquility of the landscape where he grew up.

It tells how in ignorance he coped with puberty and adolescence and on to face a cruel world.

It is a story of loneliness after being forced to leave home due to torment, family sickness, and the need to make money, only to fall victim himself to hepatitis 'B' through a blood transfusion following a knife attack.

How the scar from the attack saves him on many occasions but does not prevent him from being brutalised, imprisoned without trial, and experiencing many other misfortunes.
