The main character John Mercer, hiding in the sewers is found by Hap McGonigle, who is the leader of other survivors, and doing his best to harass and damage the invaders. The focus of the story is life changes of Mercer and the other survivors in their group. The extreme terror and danger bring out the best and worst in each person, and John finds himself examining his own motives, and the assumptions of his former world and life. Inserted at intervals, are quotations from various personalities of the time, President Roosevelt, Vice President Wallace, Time Magazine, Newspaper clips, Evacuees, Letters to the Editor, etc. which are meant to encourage the civilians under fire or to show up an ironic truth to the reader. The climax is fitting, in a real war the good guys don't always win. Mr. Chambers is a screen writer for Movies and Television.
