Volume has faded spine and edges. The gold spine plate is intact, with some minor wear at the edges. "John Henry was based on the legend of the "steel-driving man" who died after winning a contest with a steam-powered drill. In Bradford's story the protagonist is a steamboat roustabout who travels up and down the Mississippi river. The novel was made into a play, a Broadway musical production, in 1939 with Paul Robeson in the title role, which closed after seven performances.
