71433 DALRYMPLE, Sir John: Queries concerning the Conduct which England should follow in Foreign Politics in the Present State of Europe. Written in October, 1788. London, J. Debrett, 1789. Octavo, [ii, title leaf], vi, 8 [tables of exports from St Petersburg), 86 pages with 4 of the pages of tables being 2 long double-sided folding sheets. Disbound and slightly buckled, with residue from the old binding on the spine; title leaf a little dusty and slightly chipped at the corners, with some residual glue and a tiny hole near the spine and a contemporary signature on the verso; leading edge of one folding table a little chipped and dusty; a very good copy. On page 56, a correction has been made in ink (lines 6 and 7: 'a single horse' is now '2 horses'), and from lines 15-17, the following has been crosshatched out: 'that the writer of these Queries has lifted it upon his shoulder' (with reference to 'Carronades of a small bore'). Dalrymple (1726-1810), fourth baronet of Cranstoun, was one of the Barons of the Exchequer in Scotland. He was a prolific author of history and current affairs, and he 'occupied his leisure with various experiments of a useful kind. He discovered the art of making soap from herrings' (DNB). $300.00 AUD |
