SLEEMAN, Major-General Sir W.H.:
Rambles and Recollections of an Indian Official.... A new edition edited by Vincent Arthur Smith.
London, Archibald Constable, 1893/ 1844. Octavo, two volumes, xxxvi, 447 and x, 368 pages. Cloth a little rubbed at the extremities and slightly marked and sunned, with minor wear to one corner, the head of one hinge and the foot of one spine; top edge of Volume Two bumped near the spine; edges, early and late leaves foxed; a little scattered marginal foxing; one rear inner hinge cracked but firm; overall a very good set. Volume 5 in Constable's Oriental Miscellany of Original and Selected Publications. Both volumes carry the ownership signature of [Sir] Walter Crocker, Delhi, 1960, at the time Australian High Commissioner to India, with his occasional pencilled emphases and the pencilled comment 'A fascinating book. The Empire at its best' on the half-title. Chapter IV, 'A Suttee on the Nerbudda', is worth the price of admission alone; Crocker has placed several emphases here. Loosely inserted is a related newspaper clipping.
