His military career was punctuated with bitter clashes with the top brass - many of whom he did not like much. In his last command, he staged the biggest ambush on WW2 resulting in 1000 Japanese soldiers being killed. For this he received the very rare distinction of getting a commendation from the Japanese High Command.
