Thomas James arrived in South Australia in early 1838 and he was not impressed. The passengers had to walk through mud when disembarknig the boat, and then probably walk to Adelaide as bullock carts were regularly unavailable. His account of his three-and-a-half-months in South Australia, expansively entitled Six months in South Australia, is a rambling, disorganised, jaunty and entertaining glimpse of the colonys tentative beginnings.
