Episodes From Life Among The Indians & Last Rambles: With 152 Scenes And Portraits By The Artist.

CATLIN, GEORGE; ROSS, MARVIN C. (EDITOR.

59104X1 The Civilization of the American Indian Series. University of Oklahoma Press, Norman: 1959. 357 pages. Hardcover with dustjacket. Good condition. George Catlin, the nineteenth-century lawyer-turned-artist, is justly famed for his paintings of the North American Indians of the 1830s - the most remarkable portraiture record of these Indians known to us. Of equal significance, but little known, are other paintings of Indians and scenes of Indian life made between 1852 and 1855, when he worked in South America and along the coast of North America west of the Rocky Mountains. Here, brought together for the first time, are Caitlin's writings about these later travels among the Indians of the North and South America and his hitherto largely unpublished paintings of this period, from the "Cartoon" Collection - so called by Caitlin to distinguish it from his earlier collection - now in the American Museum of Natural History. These scenes and portraits were painted on the spot, often under circumstances divertingly described by him in the accompanying text. Includes an Index. $43.45USD
