This fragment of a novel which Heine began at the age of 26 and most of which, Heine claimed, was later destroyed by fire, was intended as "an eternal lamp in God's cathedral, not a sputtering stage light." At the time he wrote it Heine, as a member of the Society of Jewish Culture and Research," was actively concerned with Jewish history. To no other work did Heine devote such care and painstaking research: his letters of 1824-1825 aare full of references to The Rabbi that indicate he intended it both as a colorful historical novelette and a "somber martyr-song" of the Jewish past.
