The voles are among the most successful of all mammals. There are sixty-five species, distributed throughout Europe, northern and central Asia and North America. The Bavarian pine-vole was found at elevations of between 600 and 1000 metres in the districts of Garmisch-Partenkirschen in the Bavarian Alps and in the Tyrol, Italy. It differed from the common pine-vole in its chromosomes and aspects of its skull and teeth. The moist meadow that formed its only known habitat was destroyed by construction of a hospital during the 1980s.
