Northern Territory Correspondence. Correspondence relative to the Settlement of the Northern Territory of South Australia.

[Northern Territory].

58329 Adelaide, Government Printer, 1865. Foolscap folio, 93 pages plus a folding map (425x340mm: 'Sketch of the First Encampment of the Northern Expedition'). Recent cloth with titling on the front cover; first page lightly discoloured around the edges; map a little foxed; a superb uncut copy. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 89 of 1865. An extraordinary collection of material, commencing with the 'Corrected List of Stores for the Northern Expedition shipped on board the "Henry Ellis"' dated 12 July 1864, and ending with the details of the stock purchased and shipped to the Northern Territory, dated 3 March 1865. In between these two prosaic household accounts will be found the complete journal kept by 'Clerk in Charge, Accountant and Postmaster' Ebenezer Ward (at the behest of Boyle Travers Finniss) from 23 April 1864 - when the expedition was ready to proceed to sea at Adelaide - until 7 December 1864 (10 pages), plus detailed accounts of the fatal encounters with local Aborigines, Ward's suspension for insubordination, critical reports by Surveyor and Engineer Manton, and Surgeon and Protector of Aborigines Goldsmith - in fact by virtually everyone - with the highly critical responses to Finniss from Chief Secretary Henry Ayers, and much more ... The map also leaves nothing to be desired: it is dated 18 July 1864, less than a month after the expedition arrived. It has later amendments and 'Remarks appended 4th Oct., 1864. B.T.F.' giving details of Aboriginal attacks which resulted in a death on either side. $5500.00AUD
