The correspondence is dated from 16 December 1864 to 21 September 1865, and most of it relates to the debate over the suitability of Escape Cliffs as the site of the capital - Finniss v. Stow, Stuckey and Bauer. The upshot was the recall of Finniss, and Chief Secretary Henry Ayers' letter of 21 September 1865, printed here, gives him his marching orders and the reasons why. Other items of interest are the journal of William Patrick Auld of his expedition to Port Darwin between 17 and 27 April 1865, and Ayers' general exploring instructions to John McKinlay (one page each). $1100.00AUD
