A Conan Doyle

31764 George Newnes Limited, London undated Hardcover, 8½" x 5¾" (no jacket issued) 222 pages Red cloth-bound boards with black type to spine and front cover, Fry's Cocoa advertisement on verso title page, all text set as two columns to a page. This Arthur Conan Doyle historical romance was first published in 1891 (Dr Watson isn't mentioned!). A previous owner has very carefully analysed this book and written a chapter-by-chapter (38 chapters) summary in pen on front endpapers and verso ffep, before assessing Conan Doyle in pencil (ie "Very accurate in historical detail. Characterisation very good. Style of language - good, graphic, simple - not perhaps so good as RLS. Simple plot - not complex but serviceable for the style of novel he writes".) Similarly the rear endpapers are covered with evaluations of the major characters. Spine colour faded; dumped corners; endpapers discoloured; all pages have brown at all edges; extensive pencil underlining and marginal notations. Book in FAIR condition $50.00AUD
