The 2/4th Battalion, raised from Western Australia, was employed in "the hopeless task of adding some fire power to the doomed 8th Division in Singapore and those elements of the 7th Division deployed largely unarmed to Java. The members of the battalion fought with ferocity, but in vain and were effectively out of the war by mid-February 1942, the survivors in Japanese hands". Survivors were despatched by their captors to "every field of atrocity the Japanese, ignoring the Geneva Convention, could place them" .
