The Bible The Christian Bible is divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament, the Old Testament being made up of Jewish history books, books of prophecy, poetry, and books of law. The New Testament comprises of the four gospels, letters of the apostles, and prophecy. The New Testament was written primarily in Greek, while the Old Testament primarily in Hebrew. Today the Bible has been translated into more than 2300 languages or dialects. Many regard the Bible as the inspired Word of God, with an overarching message of the fall and redemption of mankind. Pope Damasus I assembled the first list of books of the Bible (canon) at the Council of Rome in 382AD. The original Hebrew and Greek texts were translated in Latin by Saint Jerome, which became known as the Latin Vulgate Bible. The use of numbered chapters and verses was not introduced until the Middle Ages. As Hebrew and Greek, the original languages of the Bible, have idioms and concepts not easily translated, there is an on going critical tension about whether it is better to give a word for word translation or to give a translation that gives a parallel idiom in the target language. Several translations give literal translations, such as the King James Version and the New Revised Standard Version, whereas other translations attempt to give relevant parallel idioms, such as in the New International Version. Paraphrases in contemporary language is also available in versions such as The Message Bible. Classic Christian literature Classic Christian literature deals with a variety of Christian topics, both in fictional to non-fictional form, such as Christian living, apologetics, devotionals, Biblical commentaries, doctrinal works and theological treatises. These works have been produced since the times of Jesus. Classic fictional Christian literature includes books such as The Pilgrim's Progress (1678) by John Bunyan and The Chronicles of Narnia (1950-1956) by C.S. Lewis. Examples non-fictional Christian classics include St Augustine's Confessions (354-430), The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis (1380-1471), Orthodoxy by Gilbert K. Chesterton (1874-1936), and the Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence (1605-1691).
