Book clubs and societies

A book discussion club is a group of people who meet to discuss a book or books that they have read and express their opinions, likes, dislikes, etc. It can also be known as a book group, reading group, or literature circle.
A single-title club is one in which people discuss a particular title that every person in the group has read at the same time. Clearly, the club must somehow decide ahead of time what that title will be. Most often, that title will be a new release, and it is expected that each member buy a personal copy. If it is a book discussion club that meets at a library, the title may be a new release or an older title. If they choose, each member may borrow a copy of the book from the library.
The characteristics of a multi-title club are such that each member may be reading different titles from each other at any given time. What distinguishes this from any group of unrelated people reading different things from each other is that each title is expected to be read by the next member in a serial fashion.
An open loan club is one type of multi-title club, where the books are free to be loaned among the group with the expectation of getting them back eventually. Instead of one member deciding what everyone will read, with all the cost implications of acquiring that title, these clubs usually involve circulating books they already own.
With a 'catch and release' system, the actual ownership of the book transfers with no expectation of the book returning to the original owner. The method of transfer may include a face to face hand off, sending the items though the mail, or even leaving the book in a public place with the expectation that unknown future readers will find it there.

Contemporary book clubs and societies

Contemporary book clubs can be face to face or online, in people's homes, at libraries, in schools or colleges. There are also broadcast clubs where a television, radio or podcast show features a regular segment that presents a discussion and promotion of a book. Usually the book is announced is advanced so that the audience can read the book before the discussion. Examples of these broadcast clubs include 'Oprah's Book Club' on the Oprah Winfrey Show, 'Bookclub' on British BBC Radio 4, or the 'Good Morning America Book Club' on the American TV show Good Morning America.

A personal journal to be used during each MBCO session is optional.

Book Clubs - Readings.com.au
http://www.readings.com.au/
Readings was founded in 1969 by Ross Reading, his partner Dot and Peter Reid. The original shop at 366 Lygon Street was partly funded by Dot’s teaching wage. Occasionally, after a particularly busy day, the shelves would be temporarily restocked from Ross and Dot’s bookshelves at home.
In 1983, the growing business moved to larger premises on Lygon Street. Today, Readings is a major Australian business, employing over 140 staff in five shops around Melbourne. Despite its large-scale operations, each Readings shop retains an intimate feel, with strong community ties and carefully selected ranges that reflect the character of the area and the tastes of their customers.

Book-Club
http://www.book-club.co.nz/
Book-Club

What is book-club?
We are a site for bookclubbers and booklovers, offering introductions and reviews of the latest in literary contemporary fiction. We feature bookclubs and their views and activities, and provide a link for bookclubs to communicate with each other.
Why a bookclub link?
If you're a member of a bookclub you'll know that when you meet other people from other bookclubs, that everybody loves to compare what they do, the books they are reading and what they have loved or hated. On book-club we want to allow bookclubs, from New Zealand and around the world, to tell each other about themselves and what they are reading..
What books do we cover?
We offer reviews of books that bookclubs generally love to read - mainly recent literary contemporary fiction. Because the site is run from New Zealand (know where that is?) there is a bit of a focus on New Zealand and Australian literature, as well as generally available international books. There are many book websites out there that cover the broad spectrum of books - nonfiction, science fiction, mystery, romance and historical etc, but we have often found it frustrating to find information and recommendations on the very latest and best in recent fiction. Because we get inundated with books from anywhere and everywhere, we tend to stick to books that are published by known publishers, are widely available (particularly in NZ and Aust.) and are of interest to book club readers. Apologies to the many authors who are struggling to get coverage for their self published books.
