The 18th Century

During the second half of the 18th century, the Enlightenment joined hands with absolutism. Inspired by the philosophers, absolute monarchs, such as Frederick the Great of Prussia, Joseph II of Austria, and Catherine the Great of Russia, modeled themselves on the ideal of the philosopher-king, attempting with varying degrees of success to enlist power in the service of the common good. Despite their sincerity, they succeeded in nothing so much as in making absolutism more absolute. In a genuine effort to improve the welfare of their subjects, the enlightened despots insinuated state power more deeply into daily existence.
Toward the end of the 18th century, the concentration of power in the hands of the monarch began to be challenged. European reaction to absolutism was enhanced by the success of the American Revolution (1775-1783). This reaction first crystallized in France in 1789, with the French Revolution, and from there spread throughout the continent in the following century.

18th Century Literature

The 18th century saw the development of the modern novel as literary genre. Subgenres of the novel during the 18th century were the epistolary novel, the sentimental novel, histories, the gothic novel and the libertine novel. 18th Century Europe started in the Age of Enlightenment and gradually moved towards Romanticism. Romanticism was partly a revolt against aristocratic social and political norms of the Age of Enlightenment and a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature. The movement stressed strong emotion as a source of aesthetic experience, placing new emphasis on such emotions as trepidation, horror, and the awe experienced in confronting the sublimity in untamed nature. Well known writers of the 18th century include William Congreve, Nicholas Rowe, Henry Fielding, Johnathan Swift, Thomas Gray, Rousseau, Horace Walpole, Voltaire and so on.
