The 19th Century

Key events in the 19th century included the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815); the decay of the Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and Ottoman empires; and the rise of the British Empire as the world's leading power. During this time the 19th century was an era of widespread invention and discovery, with significant developments in the understanding or manipulation of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, electricity, and metallurgy largely setting the groundwork for the comparably overwhelming and very rapid technological innovations which would take place the following century. The last remaining undiscovered landmasses of Earth, largely pacific island chains and atolls, were discovered during this century. Slavery was greatly reduced around the world in this era through abolitionist movements in Britain, America, Russia and Brazil.
The 19th century also saw the rise of several ideologies such as nationalism, socialism and liberalism, sparking revolutions across Europe. The majority of uprisings failed, however the restoration mindset of the Congress of Europe had ended. Railroads, industrialization, and a burgeoning urban population were altering Europe's landscape at the same time that materialistic thinking began to challenge the romantic primacy of poetry and philosophy.

19th Century Literature

On the literary front the new century opens with Romanticism, a movement that spread throughout Europe in reaction to 18th-century rationalism, and it develops more or less along the lines of the Industrial Revolution, with a design to react against the dramatic changes wrought on nature by the steam engine and the railway. It was also the beginning of modernism- a trend of thought that affirms the power of human beings to create, improve, and reshape their environment, with the aid of scientific knowledge, technology and practical experimentation.
Some of the most famous writers included the Russians Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekov and Fyodor Dostoevsky; the English Charles Dickens, John Keats, and Jane Austen; the Scottish Sir Walter Scott; the Irish Oscar Wilde; the Americans Edgar Allan Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Mark Twain; and the French Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac, Jules Verne and Charles Baudelaire.
