Classical literature

Classical literature is often associated with widely-read books, however, it is usually a book marking a turning point in history. Other literature may reflect the traditional values of earlier cultures or describe social clashes during that time period. Certain classics may contain revolutionary ideas or fact. Classics that are usually prominent in literature suggest a social or philosophical change, as well as being very highly revered in the authors' region or ethnic and is well-classified as a must read. The phrase 'classic book' or 'classic literature' has taken on new meaning - many view any pre-1900 book still in print as a classic, and many books are classed as modern classics because of their contemporary significance or perceived future significance.

How to study classic literature

Firstly, you must gain some general knowledge of the circumstances out of which English literature has come into being, as a whole and during its successive eras. This means mainly tracing in a general way, from period to period, the social life of the period as well as getting some knowledge of the lives of the more important authors. The major aspect, however, is the direct study of the literature itself. This study in turn should aim first at gaining knowledge of the literature as an expression of the authors' views of life and of their personalities and especially as an illustration and interpretation of the life of their periods. Also, your study should aim further at a realization of each literary work as a product of fine art, appealing to both to your mind and to your emotion, not least to the sense of Beauty and the whole higher nature. In the present books, the word Literature is generally interpreted in the strict sense, as including only writing of permanent importance and beauty.

VoS - Voice of the Shuttle
http://vos.ucsb.edu/
VoS - Voice of the Shuttle. The Voice of the Shuttle began in late 1994 as an introduction to the Web for humanists at the University of California, Santa Barbara. VoS became publicly accessible on March 21, 1995, when the Humanitas server on which it resided opened to global Web access. From its origin to October, 1999, VoS stayed at the same address on the Humanitas server. It grew in that period to over 70 pages of links to humanities and humanities-related resources on the Internet.

Its mission has been to provide a structured and briefly annotated guide to online resources that at once respects the established humanities disciplines in their professional organization and points toward the transformation of those disciplines as they interact with the sciences and social sciences and with new digital media. (See such pages as Cultural Studies, Sci-Tech and Culture, Cyberculture, and Technology of Writing.) VoS emphasizes both primary and secondary (or theoretical) resources, and defines its audience as people who have something to learn from a higher-education, professional approach to the humanities (which in practice has included students and instructors from the elementary school, high school, and general population sectors).

Luminarium: Anthology of English Literature
http://www.luminarium.org/
A comprehensive anthology and guide to English literature of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Seventeenth Century, Restoration and Eighteenth Century.

This site combines several sites first created in 1996 to provide a starting point for students and enthusiasts of English Literature. Nothing replaces a quality library, but hopefully this site will help fill the needs of those who have not access to one.

The main focus of expansion at Luminarium right now is the completion of a new section entitled "Restoration and Eighteenth Century." This site has been in the planning stages for a long time, but the realization of it was halted by a thing as mundane as a nasty bout of carpal tunnel syndrome. About half of the said section has now been completed, and the projected completion date for the section is by the end of the year.

Concurrent with the creation of the new section, more entries are being added to the Luminarium Encyclopedia almost daily; these entries serve on the most part to illuminate the biographies of the existing authors. The entries consist of biographies, places, legal terms, as well as contemporary documents, such as acts of Parliament, letters, maps, and so on. In addition to this, existing materials are updated, broken links fixed, new resources added, and new e-texts created.
